Just a thought, and for those who actually do this! :o

[Edited 3/30 for poor wording, lol. Fail.]
If you are watching more than 400 people, please do not watch me unless you actually have interest in my artwork or intend to occassionally comment.
Those who watch me along with some 5-600 others and I never hear from, I'll be even more evil than to ask you to unwatch me. I'll start contacting you and ask for opinions/thoughts/etc! :O I'll get your tail involved! Wrar!
Why? Because no one can possibly keep up with 1000+ watches, no matter how much free time they have. This kind of activity, which I suppose is intended to draw attention to the mass-watchers or create a sort of custom VCL experience, puts unneccessary strain on the FA servers and slows things down for everyone. It's costing the people who support the site money.
For those few who do it just to attract attention (and I know for a fact some people do it for that very reason because I've had people admit it!), it really becomes nothing more than flooding and/or spam.
If by some chance you happen to engage in such activity, read this, and honestly don't have any good reason for watching hundreds of people, then perhaps you might consider changing your mind.
(Also, I'm really glad that several people responded to this. :) I love getting feedback, especially on anything controversial!)

FA+

I have about 400 watchers and the only time it becomes a problem is when I don't check FA for 2 or 3 days. Otherwise I usually check my updates every few hours.
Not everyone just mass watches people to never look or comment on their work. Just because you aren't getting the comments you want doesn't mean that people have to necessarily unwatch you.
Sorry, but I watching a person is completely my personal choice, not yours. And you should really feel good that people are even watching you. But this sort of attitude can put people off. If you don't want people watching you just for the purpose of doing so (which is whatFA is for, hence an art site) then why would you join FA? Unless that is, because all you'd like is attention. What you're accusing us with 100+ watches for.
Sorry man, but this post is a fail, no offense. Again, I comment at will, when something interests me enough.
i dunno how many watches i have... *checks* 147, and i check FA every day or two...about 50 subs, 10 journals, and a half dozen comments is the norm... no you dont have to comment on every piece, but it is good practice which i myself must admit in my latent boredom have lax'd on because i can never really offer anything more than "good job" and i feel like a shmuck saying JUST that...
now, in all reality, if my rate were norm...i could handle about 300 watches... but past that, good god...
To people watching a thousand artists? Probably just to craft a sort of customized VCL or attract attention.
Of me posting this? To vent because FA was running slow? Also because I hate seeing someone with like 400 watchers get two comments. What are those people implying to the artist when that happens?
